Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Kleehäuser Quartier Vauban

about

At the time of their opening in 2006, the Kleehäuser were one of the first residential buildings with passive house standards in Germany and pioneers of ecological construction of their time. They are part of the first construction phase of the car-free and climate-friendly model district Vauban, a former military area in Freiburg im Breisgau. The multigenerational building project is still an instructive example of its integrated waste, sanitation and energy concept, as well as the stable social network and active participation of its residents during the planning process until today. In addition to vacuum toilets and grey water recycling, the cooperative's ambitious energy concept for heat and electricity enabled it to successfully meet the goals of the 2000 Watt Society and, at the time of its opening, required only 20% of the primary energy consumption compared to a conventional new building. Decisive for this are the compact building volumes, good insulation of the building envelopes, heat protection through light south-facing façades and balconies, controlled ventilation with heat recovery with individual operation, photovoltaic system and the shares in a wind power plant in the Black Forest. The flexibility of the floor plan due to the access system as well as the partly untreated and reversibly joined building material allows for a robust and low-maintenance building substance in the long term. In addition, the building group of 24 parties is actively involved in the decision-making process on construction measures, energy concept or financial planning from the very beginning within the framework of self-initiated planning meetings and makes a major contribution to saving resources through a high level of personal responsibility as well as sharing infrastructure such as washing machines or freezers.

Casa Rossa

The "Casa Rossa" building in Chemnitz was renovated using natural materials and a minimalist design concept. The building's energy consumption is low due to highly insulated envelopes and a solar thermal system on the roof. The building's prominent brickwork was completed, repaired, and glazed for a uniform surface, revealing traces of construction and repairs in the past.
